Intention of Marriage

** Because of the time it now takes to complete the marriage intentions, we ask that you contact us for an appointment to apply for a license (at least a day ahead of time). Please call us at (207) 445-2014, option 3, or by email at info@chinamaine.org. We will give you an appointment time on the day you would like to come in if we have the appropriate amount of staff available. We do not assist with the ceremony at the office.

For Maine residents: A marriage license must be obtained in the town or city where either person resides. A fee of $40 must be paid to obtain the license. After the officiant marries you, a certified copy can be obtained for $15. This is the "official" copy needed to change your last name on records or to provide documentation that you are legally married.

**If either person was previously married, you must present documentation of dissolution of the former marriage (death certificate, divorce decree, or annulment). This document must be an original and contain a raised seal. Please call 207-445-2014, option 3, or email info@chinamaine.org if you have any questions.

For out-of-state residents: When coming to Maine to get married, you can obtain a license in any town and then get married in any town. A fee of $40 must be paid to obtain the license. After the officiant marries you, a certified copy can be obtained for $15. This is the "official" copy needed to change your last name on records or to provide documentation that you are legally married. We strongly suggest to obtain the license in the town which you plan to be married in.
